Tattoo Aftercare in Riverside: A Day-by-Day Guide to Healing Clean
You just walked out of a Riverside tattoo studio with a fresh piece of art on your skin. Now what?
The next two to four weeks determine how your tattoo will look for the rest of your life. Sharp lines or blurry edges, vibrant color or washed-out pigment, crisp detail or patchy fade — almost all of it comes down to aftercare. A great artist gives you a great tattoo. Your aftercare keeps it that way.
At Arcane Ink Tattoo & Piercings in Riverside, we walk every client through aftercare in person before they leave the studio. But once you're home, it's easy to forget specifics — especially when you're four hours in and the new tattoo starts to itch. This guide breaks it down day by day, with a few Riverside-specific notes about sun and heat exposure that most generic guides skip.
The First Few Hours After Your Tattoo
Your artist will wrap your fresh tattoo before you leave the studio. There are two main types of wraps used in Riverside shops:
Standard plastic wrap or pad: Leave on for 2–4 hours. Once removed, gently wash the tattoo (more on that below) and let it air-dry.
Second-skin / Saniderm style wrap: Leave on for 24 hours up to several days, depending on what your artist recommends. This breathable adhesive bandage keeps the tattoo protected from bacteria while it does its initial weeping.
Whichever wrap you have, follow your artist's specific instructions. If you're not sure, call the shop — every reputable Riverside tattoo studio would rather answer a quick question than have you guess.
What to expect in the first 24 hours:
Some weeping of plasma, ink, and blood (totally normal)
Mild swelling and redness around the tattoo
A warm or slightly sore feeling, similar to a sunburn
Possible bruising on bonier placements
What's not normal: spreading redness beyond the tattoo, pus, fever, or red streaks moving away from the tattoo. Those are infection signs and warrant a call to your doctor.
Day 1–3: The Wash Phase
This is when most healing damage happens — usually from doing too much or too little.
How to wash your tattoo:
Wash your hands thoroughly first
Use lukewarm water (not hot — hot water opens pores and pulls ink)
Apply a small amount of fragrance-free, gentle soap (Dr. Bronner's Baby Unscented, Dial Gold, or Cetaphil work well)
Gently rub the tattoo with clean fingertips — no washcloths, no loofahs, nothing abrasive
Rinse with lukewarm water
Pat dry with a clean paper towel (not a bath towel — towels harbor bacteria and lint)
Let the tattoo air out for 5–10 minutes before applying anything
Frequency: 2–3 times per day. Morning, after work, before bed is a good rhythm.
Moisturizing: After washing and air-drying, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion (Lubriderm, Aveeno, or a tattoo-specific product like Hustle Butter or Aquaphor). The word "thin" is doing heavy lifting here — over-moisturizing is the single most common aftercare mistake we see at Arcane Ink. Suffocated tattoos heal slower and lose more ink.
Day 4–7: The Itchy Peeling Phase
Around day 4 or 5, your tattoo will start to peel and flake. It looks alarming — like the ink is coming off — but it's just dead skin shedding. The actual ink is layered deeper in the dermis and isn't going anywhere.
What to do:
Keep washing 2–3 times a day
Keep moisturizing thinly
Let the peeling happen on its own
What to absolutely not do:
Pick at flakes
Scratch the itch
Peel any skin off, even loose pieces
Picking pulls ink out of the still-healing skin underneath, which leaves patchy spots that need touch-ups. If the itch is unbearable, slap (don't scratch) the area or apply a thin layer of lotion to calm it.
Day 8–14: The Sensitive Healing Phase
By the second week, most of the surface peeling is done, but the deeper layers of skin are still healing. The tattoo may look slightly cloudy or dull during this phase — that's normal. It's called "tattoo blow-out fog" and it clears as the skin finishes healing underneath.
Continue washing 1–2 times a day. Continue moisturizing thinly. The tattoo will start to look more like its finished self by the end of week two.
Week 3–4: Almost Healed
The tattoo looks fully healed to you, but the deeper layers of skin are still settling for another 2–4 weeks. You can ease off on washing frequency and moisturize as needed for normal skin care.
This is when you can start:
Returning to normal gym routines
Swimming in chlorinated pools (carefully)
Sleeping directly on the tattoo without worry
This is when sun protection becomes the priority for life.
The Riverside Sun Problem (And Why It Matters More Here)
Riverside, Moreno Valley, Corona, and the rest of the Inland Empire average around 280+ sunny days a year. That's a lot of UV hitting your skin — which means tattoos in our region fade faster than tattoos in, say, Seattle or Portland.
Sun and tattoos: the rules
First 4 weeks: No direct sun on the tattoo. Period. UV on healing skin causes ink loss, scarring, and uneven healing. Wear loose clothing over the tattoo or stay indoors during peak hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
After 4 weeks: Sunscreen, every time. SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 is better for highly exposed placements (forearms, calves, shoulders, back of neck). Reapply every two hours when you're outside.
For the life of the tattoo: Consistent sun protection is the single biggest factor in long-term tattoo quality. Riverside clients who never sunscreen their tattoos often need full color refreshes within 5–7 years. Clients who consistently sunscreen can keep tattoos crisp for 15–20+ years.
What to Avoid During Healing
For at least 2 weeks (longer for larger pieces), avoid:
Direct sunlight on the tattoo — even brief exposure causes damage
Pools, hot tubs, ocean, lakes, rivers — soaking opens the skin and introduces bacteria
Long hot showers — quick lukewarm rinses only
Tight or rough clothing rubbing against the tattoo
Heavy sweating — gym sessions that cause significant sweat on the tattoo can introduce bacteria and irritate healing skin
Picking, scratching, peeling
Pet contact with the tattoo (pet dander and bacteria are major irritants)
Shaving over the tattoo until fully healed
Fake tan, self-tanner, or tanning beds — both during healing and for the life of the tattoo
When to Call Your Artist
Most healing concerns are normal. But contact your artist or shop if you notice:
Spreading redness beyond the tattoo borders after day 3
Pus or yellow-green discharge (clear weeping is normal early on)
Fever or chills following the tattoo session
Significant ink loss in patches after week 2
A reaction to the ink (raised welts, intense itching beyond normal healing)
At Arcane Ink, our clients can call us at (951) 224-9177 anytime during business hours with aftercare questions. We'd rather you call about a normal flake than wait and worry about something serious.
Touch-Ups: Normal and Usually Free
Even with perfect aftercare, some tattoos heal with small spots that need touch-ups. This is completely normal — body chemistry, placement, and healing variation all play a role. Most reputable Riverside tattoo shops, including Arcane Ink, offer free touch-ups within 30–90 days of the original session for normal healing variation.
If you notice spots that didn't heal evenly, take a few photos in good lighting and reach out to your artist. Don't try to "fix" anything yourself with at-home pigments or marker — we've seen it, and it never ends well.
